The school is in an area with significant social and economic deprivation, and free school meals eligibility stands presently at around 48%. [ citation needed ] The principal of the school is Janet Bridges, who received an OBE in the 2013 New Years Honours list for her services to education.
It is the fourth full year of compulsory education, with children being admitted who are aged 8 before 1 September in any given academic year. It is also the second year of Key Stage 2 in which the National Curriculum is taught. [4] Year 4 is usually the fifth year of primary school or the second year group in a Junior School.

The school has won and been runners up in the UK Rock Challenge and in 2006 students from King Richard School won the Rock Crew of the Year Award. A November 2009 Ofsted inspection assessed the school with Grade 3 (satisfactory). [2] In October 2012, the school was Ofsted inspected again, and assessed the school as Grade 2 (Good).
In practice, many children enter Reception at the beginning of the school year, aged 4. Fourth grade is the equivalent of 'Year 5' (ages 9–10) in England and Wales, Primary 6 in Northern Ireland and Scotland – the sixth year of compulsory education in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. [11]
The school had around 1,000 pupils. The school closed in 2011 due to a reduction in pupil numbers on Canvey Island, [4] which caused great concern amongst parents. [5] The grounds were reused for the new Castle View School which moved to new buildings on the location of the former school. [6]
The school's Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) was opened in September 2012 to offer support, guidance and advice to students; the school's Zone 7 class also resides there. The FLC was renamed The HUB at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, and the school's homework club, which originally took place there, was moved to the Technology block.
