The patron saints of the Diocese of San José in California are Saint Joseph and Clare of Assisi.The diocese serves 525,000 Catholics, encompassing 54 parishes, missions, and pastoral centers, eight preschools, 26 TK/K-8th grade, 28 elementary schools and one high school, three college/university campus ministries, one of which part of a Catholic university, and several Catholic cemeteries.
St. Clare's church celebrated its 200th anniversary on Sunday, April 17, 1977, with a 12:15 pm mass officiated by Archbishop Joseph McGucken and a reception dinner and dancing at Santa Clara's Benson Center. The altar at Our Lady of Peace Church. Since 1976, Eucharistic adoration is in progress at Our Lady of Peace Church 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, unless the Holy Mass is being celebrated. Our Lady of Peace church was founded on June 24, 1961. Fr. Joseph G. Sullivan, the founding pastor, oversaw construction of the church, hall, and rectory.
Located at 1375 East Santa Clara Street in San Jose (just off U.S. Highway 101), the Portuguese National Church of Five Wounds are the heart and soul of Little Portugal. On November 16, 1913, Portuguese residents of San Jose purchased the land that became the site of Five Wounds. However, it was not until 1914 that the parish was created.
The original parish church was a Gothic building at the intersection of Ninth and Santa Clara streets, which was completed in 1888. This church was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but rebuilt less than a year later. The land acquired for the construction of the church was formerly an orchard on the estate of actor Gary Cooper. [2] Ground was broken for the construction of the church on February 9, 1947, and the cost of the church was estimated at $150,000 with an additional $25,000 for furnishings. [3] The church was dedicated in November 1947.
