Telephone numbers in area code 678 were first assigned to customers signing up for new telephone service on January 15, 1998. On September 2, 2001, area code 470, was added to the 678 overlay area of area codes 404 and 770. [1] Telephone numbers from the NPA were assigned after exhaustion of area code 678.
In 1906 the state mineralogist of California reported on 52 granite quarrying areas in 17 counties. When it changed to 10 digit dialing people started having to remember area codes all the time. When 770 came out people started writing 7/ as short hand for the area code, so when 678 was introduced it was treated the same way with a 6/. Atlanta had 10 digit dialing before the rest of the country so it's probably not common in most other areas.

The Norcross Brothers Granite Quarry, more recently the Castellucci Quarry, is a historic granite quarry on Quarry Road in Branford, Connecticut.Opened in 1887 by the Norcross Brothers construction firm, it supplied granite to a number of high-profile construction projects, including the Statue of Liberty and the Marshall Field and Company Building, and was in operation until 1980.

The state operated with two area codes until May 3, 1992, when area code 706 was created for the two separate areas outside of the metro Atlanta area. Due to complaints from exurban residents who were to be put in 706, they were moved back into 404, which makes every new area code added to the metro area run out of numbers sooner.
