Maiasaura is a characteristic fossil of the middle portion (lithofacies 4) of the Two Medicine Formation, dated from about 86.3 to 70.6 million years ago. [2] Maiasaura lived alongside the troodontids Stenonychosaurus and Troodon and the basal ornithopod Orodromeus, as well as the dromaeosaurid Bambiraptor and the tyrannosaur Daspletosaurus. [2]
Horner and others studied the histology of Maiasaura peeblesorum bones. They found that Maiasaura only took 8–10 years to reach adult body size. A 7 metres (23 ft) adult Maiasaura could have an adult body mass of over 2,000 kilograms (4,400 lb) despite hatching at a length of about half a meter and with a body mass of less than a kilogram ...
Their monograph, Hadrosaurian Dinosaurs of North America, was published in 1942, and looked back at the whole of understanding about the family. It was designed as a definitive work, covering all aspects of their biology and evolution, and as part of it every known species was re-evaluated and many of them redescribed.
Turonian-Coniacian megaraptorids, only known from South America, were larger, at 6–7 metres (20–23 ft) long, and the final Santonian-Maastrichtian forms were larger still, at 7–10 metres (23–33 ft). [1] Traces on the preserved ribs were interpreted by the describing authors as being attachment points for ligaments.

Parasaurolophus, a crested hadrosaur.. Hadrosaurids, also commonly referred to as duck-billed dinosaurs or hadrosaurs, were large terrestrial herbivores. The diet of hadrosaurid dinosaurs remains a subject of debate among paleontologists, especially regarding whether hadrosaurids were grazers who fed on vegetation close to the ground, or browsers who ate higher-growing leaves and twigs.
Maiasaura is one example. [15] Montana has an especially good fossil record of ceratopsid dinosaurs. [16] Examples of contemporary local ceratopsians include Einiosaurus. The theropods Daspletosaurus and Troodon were also present. Both Maiasaura and Troodon are known to have formed nesting colonies in the area. [15]
