The leaves are curiously spatulate, long, thick, spoon-shaped, of a shiny dark green. They are toxic like all Plumeria leaves.

[9] Linnaeus later considered it to be the sole species in his new genus Scaevola, although the combination Scaevola plumieri was first published by Martin Vahl in 1791.
