Poetry was the principal form of literature Bahraini women engaged in during the 20th century. In fact, it was estimated that one-sixth of all Bahraini poets between 1925 and 1985 were women. Prominent female writers at the time included the likes of Iman Asiri, Fatima al-Taytun, Fathiya 'Ajlan, Hamda Khamis and Fawziyya al-Sindi. [6]
Khamis was born in Bahrain in 1945. In 1969, she published her first collection "Shayaza" (translates into 'Shrapnel' in English), thus becoming the first woman to emerge into the Bahraini poetry scene. Many other Bahraini female poets followed after her, and helped create Bahrain's thriving literary scene. [2]

The poetic collection (Diwan) “Poetic Lights” is regarded as the first and most famous work of the poet Munira Ibrahim Al-Sabii. The Diwan contains many diverse poetic poems, and it was dedicated to the poet Abdul Rahman Rafie, who Munira said that the credit is due to him because of the great impact he created in the development of her poetic and literary career.

Fawziyya was born in Manama, Bahrain in 1957. She has been acknowledged as one of the first Bahraini women to seek an education abroad, having obtained a degree in commerce from the University of Cairo. [2] Fawziyya published six collections of Arabic poetry from 1998 to 2005.

On Wednesday, 23 February 2011, during the early days of the Bahraini uprising, Ayat Al-Qurmezi delivered a poem from the podium to the gathering of pro-democracy demonstrators at the Pearl Roundabout, that was critical of government policies and specifically those of Khalifa ibn Salman Al Khalifa, the prime minister of Bahrain.
