The Cernan Earth and Space Center is a public planetarium on the campus of Triton College in the Chicago suburb of River It is named for astronaut Eugene Cernan (1934-2017), who flew aboard the Gemini 9 and Apollo 10 missions and, as commander of Apollo 17 , was the last astronaut to leave his footprints on the Moon.
The center currently holds 270,000 square feet (25,000 m 2) of space, including a main exhibition hall, meeting rooms, conference centers, banquet facilities, a restaurants and lounge, a full kitchen, and a 500-space underground parking garage. The roadside attraction broke ground on December 19, 1996. Billed as a museum and designed to look like a turn-of-the-20th-century industrial factory, the attraction was opened at 171 West Michigan Avenue in May 1998.
