The Benedictus was the song of thanksgiving uttered by Zechariah on the occasion of the circumcision of his son, John the Baptist. [1] The canticle received its name from its first words in Latin ("Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel", “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel”).
In the King James version of the Bible and the Douay-Rheims Bible, his name was written Zacharias. He is recognized as a saint in both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The text for Canticle I was taken from A Divine Rapture by Quarles, a paraphrase of sections from the Song of Songs from the Old Testament. It arrives several times at the refrain line "I my best beloved’s am – so he is mine". [4] As already the original biblical poetry, it is "full of beautiful, sensuous imagery". [4]
