Manchester United qualified as winners of the 2015–16 FA Cup. They defeated Crystal Palace 2–1 after extra time on 21 May 2016 to win their 12th title (tying the then-record with Arsenal). It was their 30th FA Charity/Community Shield, winning a record 20. The previous match between the two sides was a 1–1 draw at Old Trafford on 1 May 2016.
The match was played on 10 August 2008 between 2007–08 Premier League champions Manchester United and 2007–08 FA Cup winners Portsmouth as the "curtain-raiser" to the 2008–09 English football season. [2] The match marked the 100th year since the first Charity Shield, also won by Manchester United after a replay in August 1908.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said before the match that he was pleased that his side was one of the teams to play in the final Charity Shield match to be contested at the old Wembley Stadium and was hoping the win could give the team a good start stating: "The Charity Shield is not the most important fixture, but nonetheless it is preparation – and in preparation you want to do well.
