He is generally credited as being Sangamon County’s first European settler. *1818: Illinois, population less than 40,000, becomes 21st state. *1819: German traveler Ferdinand Ernst describes “the wonderful land upon the Sangamon.”

Sangamon County was formed in 1821 from Madison and Bond Counties. The county took its name from the Sangamon River which runs through it. Sangamon comes from the Pottawatomie word Sain-guee-mon allegedly meaning "where there is plenty to eat."
