The University of Hong Kong (HKU) (Chinese: 香港大學) is a public research university in Pokfulam, Hong Kong.It was founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese by the London Missionary Society and formally established as the University of Hong Kong in 1911.
The programme was involved in the Robert Chung Affair in 2000, a political scandal which Dr Chung had spoken out on the programme being presurred by the then chief executive and university's chancellor Tung Chee-hwa through the university's vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor from publishing the approval rates of the government, leading to an investigation panel being set up by the university.

The university lends its name to HKU station, the main public transport access to the campus (and the Lung Fu Shan and Shek Tong Tsui neighbourhoods), opened on 28 December 2014. The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine is situated 4.5 km [ clarification needed ] southwest of the main campus, in the Southern District near Sandy Bay and Pok Fu Lam .
Old Halls is a collective name of Lugard Hall, Eliot Hall and May Hall given in 1969. It was closed in 1992. The first residential hall under the university's direct management was Lugard Hall, which opened in 1913 and was originally named University Hall (not to be confused with the later University Hall purchased in 1956).
Previously, all HKU LLB graduates would have been admitted into its PCLL programme; now, just over two-thirds are admitted (i.e. at least a decent 2:1 honours in the LLB). Non-HKU LLB students usually require a 2:1 honours. In 2019-20, 117 places were government-funded and 172 were self-funded.
