Jerkins was a music executive and mentor on season 10 of American Idol. In 2013, Jerkins was hired on to be a producer for Michael Jackson's posthumous album Xscape. He originally worked on the title track for the album from 1999 to 2001. He is the only producer to work on the original version and reworking version of the title track.
In 2009, he independently released his debut solo album, New York Town, which was recorded at The Magic Shop in New York's SoHo neighborhood. New York Town was eventually picked up by Dutch label Continental Records Services in Europe and the UK. His second album, Barn Doors and Concrete Floors, was released on March 29, 2011.

Yellowcard was formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida, after its members met at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts.The band got its name from a phrase its members used in high school: whenever somebody did something stupid at a party, such as spilling beer on the carpet, they cited soccer laws and gave the offender a "yellow card" for committing a "party foul".
