The festival began operation in 1979 on grounds adjacent to the Colombiere Center in Clarkston, near the junction of I-75 and Dixie Highway. In 1985, organisers moved the festival to 100 acres (40 ha) of property between I-75 and Dixie Highway, one mile (1.6 km) north of the Mount Holly Ski Resort.
Three Rivers Festival is a 501(c)4 not-for-profit organization founded in 1969, and funded entirely by vendor participation fees, souvenir sales, refreshment sales, entertainment ticket sales, and the sponsorship and support of area businesses. The Festival Title sponsor for the 2009 and 2010 editions was Fort Wayne Newspapers.

The Michigan State Fair, first held in 1849, was the nation's first state fair. It was held in various locations throughout Michigan until 1904, when Joseph L. Hudson formed the State Fair Land Company, acquired 135 acres of land at this site, and deeded it to the Michigan Agricultural Society. The 1905 Michigan State Fair was held on this site.
