The area contains many lakes, such as the Presque Isle Lake and the headwaters of the Presque Isle River. According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 74.4 square miles (192.8 km 2 ), of which, 61.7 square miles (159.8 km 2 ) of it is land and 12.7 square miles (33.0 km 2 ) of it (17.10%) is water.
The Presque Isle Light began operation in 1873 and is still in service today. The Presque Isle peninsula forms Presque Isle Bay, which serves as a natural harbor for Erie. During the 19th century, as Lake Erie navigation grew more important, shipping aids were built on Presque Isle. As of 2007, two main lighthouses can be found in the park.
Presque Isle was inhabited by Native Americans before the arrival of Europeans in the 17th century. The last chieftain of the local Ojibwe, Charlie Kawbawgam, who died in 1903 at the age of 103, is buried at the park alongside his wife, Charlotte. [3] [4] In the late 1800s, Presque Isle was occupied by a federally owned lighthouse.
