The highway's present alignment measures 319 kilometres (198 mi) long, of which the western 180 km (110 mi) between the inter-provincial border with New Brunswick at Fort Lawrence through to Sutherlands River is a 4-lane divided freeway.
A 100-series highway is a designation applied to a highway that can be a controlled-access expressway, Super-2, or fully divided freeway. The designation can also be applied in some cases to sections of uncontrolled access roads which are deemed strategically important and which will be upgraded in the future to controlled-access.

Historical Note: Nova Scotia's original arterial highway number system had route number signs in the same shape as the U.S. Highway route number signs. These signs are now used for trunk highways. Nova Scotia is planning to convert many 100-series highways to divided 4-lane highways during the 21st century, pending availability of funding.

Route 1 is the primary east–west road on the island of Newfoundland. [1] The eastern terminus of Route 1 is St. John's. From there, the highway crosses the island 903 kilometres (561 mi) to Channel-Port aux Basques, its western terminus. From there, the Trans-Canada Highway is carried across the Cabot Strait by ferry to North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Route 470, also known as La Poile Highway, is a highway on the West Coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. [1] It is the last provincial highway off Route 1 before approaching the Marine Atlantic Ferry to Nova Scotia, in Channel-Port aux Basques. The route is 42.8 kilometres (26.6 mi) in length.
