Big Rapids is a city and the seat of government of Mecosta County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,727 at the 2020 census , [ 2 ] down from 10,601 in 2010 . [ 5 ] The city is surrounded by Big Rapids Charter Township but they are completely separate jurisdictions.
In 1983 with the extension of the US 131 freeway west of Big Rapids to the interchange with 19 Mile Road, the former route of US 131 through Big Rapids on State Street and Northland Drive north of Perry Street was designated as a business loop, using M-20 (Perry Street) to connect back to the freeway on the southern end.

M-20 is a state trunkline highway in the US state of Michigan that runs from New Era to Midland.It crosses through rural Lower Peninsula forest land between the two ends. The highway serves the college towns of Big Rapids and Mt. Pleasant, home of the main campuses of Ferris State University and Central Michigan University, both located near the trunkline.
U.S. Route 131 crosses the west side of the township, leading south to Big Rapids and Grand Rapids, and north to Reed City and Cadillac. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 37.6 square miles (97 km 2), of which 37.0 square miles (96 km 2) are land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km 2), or 1.58%, are water.
