France achieved a first series win in New Zealand in 1994, when they won both tests. Since 2000, the two teams have contested the Dave Gallaher Trophy.
The record for most Test match appearances, or caps, is held by Fabien Pelous with 118. Serge Blanco played for France between 1980 and 1991, and has scored 38 Test tries for France – more than any other player. The record for most Test points is held by Frédéric Michalak, who has scored 422 points for France in his 74 Test matches to date.
An inexperienced team New Zealand team arrived in France in the autumn. The vast majority of New Zealand's top players had taken part in a rebel tour of South Africa in 1986 and had been banned. In November 1995, France played the All Blacks in two tests, winning the first 22–15 at Toulouse and losing the second 37–12 at Paris. France won back-to-back Grand Slams in 1997 and 1998. At the 1999 World Cup they defeated tournament favourites the All Blacks in the semi-finals, but lost to the Wallabies in the final. [10]
The 1977 New Zealand rugby union tour of Italy and France was a series of nine matches played by the New Zealand national rugby union team (the All Blacks) in Italy and France in October and November 1977. The All Blacks won eight of their nine games, losing only the first of the two internationals against France.
In the quarter-finals, the All Blacks faced France, the last team to beat New Zealand in a Rugby World Cup match (in the quarter-final stage of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, also at the Millennium Stadium). However, New Zealand crushed France 62–13, the highest winning margin in a World Cup knockout game since their win over Wales in 1987. [6]
The record for the most Test appearances for the All Blacks is held by Sam Whitelock — who has played 153 Test matches for the team. Richie McCaw was the first All Black to play over 100 Test matches; a record he achieved during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
