Military Training Instructor. United States Air Force Basic Military Training (also known as BMT or boot camp) is a seven-week program of physical and combat training required in order for an individual to become enlisted into the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and United States Space Force.
As part of the Fit to Fight program, the Air Force adopted a more stringent physical fitness assessment in 2004 and replaced the annual ergo-cycle (stationary bike) test that the Air Force had used for several years. [1] [2] Results are stored in the Air Force Fitness Management System (AFFMS) and accessible via the AF Portal. [3]
The first few weeks of training are geared toward orienting the cadet with Air Force standards. The focus is on physical training, drill and ceremonies, and academics. Cadets will be expected to work with their fellow flight and squadron members to accomplish specific tasks as required by their Flight Commander and the Cadet Wing.
The testing events are conducted in accordance with standards detailed in Army FM 7–22: Army Physical Readiness Training.Prior to the start of each event, the standard is read aloud, followed by a demonstration in which an individual demonstrates both the correct exercise and any disqualifying behaviors which would make the exercise incorrect.
In 1951, Parks Air Force Base in Dublin, California, became a BMT center, with training beginning in March 1952. BMT at Parks AFB ceased later in the decade and the installation was transferred to the U.S. Army in 1959. For a brief time between 1966 and 1968, the Air Force operated a second BMT at Amarillo Air Force Base in Amarillo, Texas.
The Air Force Physical Training Gear (AFPTG) consists of: Shirts and Sweatshirt: Light-grey short-sleeve, long-sleeve, and sweatshirt with reflective Air Force logo on the left chest, reflective stripes on the sleeves, and reflective AIR FORCE lettering centered on the back. As similar to the Navy, the sweatshirt has an optional hood.
The selection period culminates in extended training day, an extra long day of physical training meant to simulate a real life mission. [3] After extended training day, candidates are awarded a blue ascot. [5] The second phase is the training phase, in which students are physically trained up to graduation standards. [3]
As from 2020/2021 a new set of fitness tests, the Role Fitness Test, have been introduced, which cover a broader range of physical performance but have the disadvantage of requiring equipment such as a hex bar for deadlifts, a pull up bar for pull ups, power-bags to lift and carry, and weighted bag (simulating a casualty) to drag.
