Delta Lambda Phi is a social fraternity for gay, bisexual, transgender, and progressive men. [1] Delta Lambda Phi has three types of chapters: campus-based, multi-campus based, and community-based. Its chapters are assigned a sequential Greek letter designation according to the order in which they were chartered.

The fraternity began with fifteen friends at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, California who wanted to create a club for Hispanic students at the predominantly Anglo campus. [5] [2] Initially, the group called itself "Naco", after Spanish slang for a person who gets along well with everyone. [5] This became Nu Alpha Kappa on February 26, 1988. [4]

LGBTQ fraternities and sororities have existed since the 1980s, with Delta Phi Upsilon being established in 1985 and Delta Lambda Phi in 1986. These groups are intended to provide members with access to Greek life without fear of homophobic reprisal or behavior by fellow members, resulting from a history of homophobia within longer-established organizations.

Chi Delta Theta's regional expansion began with a colony at Cal Poly, SLO which chartered as the Beta chapter in 1993. It reached Northern California with establishment of Epsilon chapter in 2000 at UC Davis. The sorority now has seven chapters and one colony, all in California. The organization is open to national expansion. [2]
