The shapefile format is a geospatial vector data format for geographic information system (GIS) software. It is developed and regulated by Esri as a mostly open specification for data interoperability among Esri and other GIS software products. [1]
This was most common from the 1970s through the early 1990s, because GIS software developers had to invent their own geometry data structures, but incorporated existing relational database file formats for the attributes. For example, the Esri Shapefile format includes the .dbf file from the DOS dBase software.
ArcGIS Desktop Standard, formerly known as ArcEditor, is the midlevel software suite designed for advanced editing of spatial data in shapefiles and geodatabases.
Shapefile – open, hybrid vector data format using SHP, SHX and DBF files (by ESRI) Spatial Data File – high-performance geodatabase format, native to MapGuide (by Autodesk ) TIGER – Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing
Esri’s ArcGIS platform has provided GIS data, analytics software, and training to thousands of non-profit organizations and individual conservation projects since 1993. [ 31 ] In 2017, Esri began a partnership with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to create a data hub, Federated Systems, based on Esri's ArcGIS platform.
Shapefile (Esri 1992–present) As the GIS industry grew to incorporate more casual users, the inherent complexity of the coverage data structure became a concern. When Esri released ArcView GIS 2.0 in 1992, it introduced the new shapefile format for vector data. This was a much simpler data model, eliminating features such as topology, but was ...
[10]: 215 It was common in early GIS systems such as the Map Overlay and Statistical System (MOSS) as well as most recent data formats, such as the Esri shapefile, geography markup language (GML), and almost all spatial databases. In this model, each feature geometry is encoded separately from any others in the data set, regardless of whether ...
ArcExplorer is a lightweight data viewer from ESRI for maps and GIS data in these formats: ESRI Shapefile; ArcInfo coverages; ArcSDE layers; Images; ArcIMS Services (e.g., Geography Network sources) ArcExplorer performs a variety of basic GIS functions, including display, query, and data retrieval applications.
