The first game in the series, Mega Man Legends (titled Rockman DASH: Hagane no Bōkenshin in Japan), was released for PlayStation in December 1997. It was the first fully 3-D action-adventure Mega Man game and introduced new mechanics to the franchise such as RPG elements and a sandbox style environment for Mega Man to explore.

Mega Man Legends 2 brings back several characters from its predecessor. This includes the protagonist Mega Man Volnutt (whose original name is Mega Man Trigger), a Digger in charge of exploring ruins to find Refractors, [8] Roll Caskett, his spotter, who is searching for her missing parents, [9] and Data, a mechanical monkey who contains all of Mega Man's original memories. In Mega Man 7, Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10 and Mega Man 11, he rescues Mega Man, as well as Proto Man in Mega Man 10, from pits. In Mega Man 8, he can assist Mega Man during the Rush Jet scenes, and also provides him with an energy barrier in Mega Man & Bass. He assists Duo and Proto Man as a temporary invincibility power-up in Power Fighters.
The original Mega Man Legacy Collection was released on August 25, 2015, for Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. [3] Developed by Digital Eclipse, it is a collection of the first six titles in the original Mega Man series, originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System between 1987–1993.
