Island Home was sold by the New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamboat Co. in 1895 or 1896 (sources vary.) [4]. Records of the Island Home resurfaced in the 1897-1900 editions of Record of American and Foreign Shipping as a 184' long, 30-ton vessel.
In 1874, Old Colony founded the Martha's Vineyard Railroad, built across nine miles (14.5 km) on sand of the island of Martha's Vineyard, running from the Oak Bluffs steamer wharf to Mattakeeset Lodge in Katama, Edgartown. 1950s postcard of Islander at Woods Hole. It was built in 1950 by Maryland Drydock Company and was a ferry for the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority, primarily on the Martha's Vineyard run, until March 5, 2007, when it was replaced with the new M/V Island Home, a new ferry which is both larger and faster than the "Islander".
MV Island Home is a ferry built by VT Halter Marine in 2005 for the Steamship Authority. She replaced the MV Islander on the Authority's route between Woods Hole and Vineyard Haven. [1] She has been serving the Woods Hole–Martha's Vineyard route since her maiden voyage on March 5, 2007. [4] [2]
Daily ferry service brings tourists, residents and supplies from Woods Hole to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. It is the main ferry line between the Vineyard and the mainland (as Nantucket is further east, its main line leaves Hyannis). A seasonal ferry, the Island Queen, runs from Falmouth Harbor to Martha's Vineyard. [10]
Hy-Line introduced high-speed service to Martha's Vineyard in 2005, using its 1997-built ferry Lady Martha. [5] Another high-speed catamaran, Grey Lady IV , was delivered in 2016 to replace Hy-Line's monohull vessel, the Great Point on the Nantucket route.
In 1928, the steam-powered ferry Islander, which had begun service in 1923, was renamed Martha's Vineyard. It operated until at least the 1940s. [4] In 1993, a new diesel-powered ferry named MV Martha's Vineyard started its service to Martha's Vineyard and Woods Hole. It is the third vessel to be named after Martha's Vineyard. [5]
