A black fly or blackfly [1] (sometimes called a buffalo gnat, turkey gnat, or white socks) is any member of the family Simuliidae of the Culicomorpha infraorder. It is related to the Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae, and Thaumaleidae. Over 2,200 species of black flies have been formally named, of which 15 are extinct. [2]
Oxycera analis can reach a length of 5.5–7 millimetres (0.22–0.28 in) and a wingspan of 5.9–6.6 millimetres (0.23–0.26 in). [7] In males of these medium-small soldier flies the body is almost entirely black, but the scutellar tubercles can be yellowish.
Ptecticus is a genus of flies in the family Stratiomyidae (soldier flies). [5] The ground colour of the body may be yellow, brown or black, and the abdomen often shows a degree of transverse stripes. They may mimic parasitic wasps in appearance and habits. The wings are often dusky and the second abdominal segment may be translucent.
