John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music.
Giant Steps is a studio album by the jazz musician John Coltrane. It was released in February 1960 through Atlantic Records. [1] [2] [4] This was Coltrane's first album as leader for the label, with which he had signed a new contract the previous year. The record is regarded as one of the most influential jazz albums of all time.
Coltrane was born Alice Lucille McLeod on August 27, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, [3] and grew up in a musical household. Her mother, Anna McLeod, was a member of the choir at her church; her half-brother, Ernest Farrow, became a jazz drummer; [4] and her younger sister, Marilyn McLeod, became a songwriter at Motown.
Before John Was a Jazz Giant consists of five poetic stanzas, each beginning with the phrase "Before John was a jazz giant". The stanzas provide "biographical details through metaphors evoking sound", such as "Before John was a jazz giant, / he heard Grandpa’s Sunday sermons, / Mama playing hymns for the senior choir, / and the scoutmaster’s call to join a band".

According to author Tony Whyton, "Coltrane had employed engineer Bernard Drayton at short notice to record the concert outside of Coltrane's contractual obligations with Impulse records, so the question remains as to whether this recording was to be used for general release or as a simple documentation of a live performance event."
