Helena Modjeska Chase was born in Omaha, Nebraska, [7] [1] on September 23, 1900. Her father, Clement Chase, [4] was a publisher [1] and editor of Omaha's "Excelsior" newspaper, [8] [9] as well as a bookstore owner.
