The history of human activity in Michigan, a U.S. state in the Great Lakes, began with settlement of the western Great Lakes region by Paleo-Indians perhaps as early as 11,000 B.C.E. The first formal census in 1845 recorded a population of 1,510 and an area of 4 square miles (10 km 2 ). The city of Grand Rapids was incorporated April 2, 1850.
