According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.6 square miles (35 km 2). 5.3 square miles (14 km 2) of it is land, and 8.3 square miles (21 km 2) of it (60.79%) is water.

Crockett is located on the Mexican land grant Rancho El Pinole made to Ygnacio Martinez, and is named after Joseph B. Crockett, a judge on the California Supreme Court. [6] The town started when Thomas Edwards Sr. bought 1,800 acres (730 ha) of land from Judge Crockett in 1866.
