USS Nassau (LHA-4) was a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship. When active, she was capable of transporting more than 3,000 United States Navy and United States Marine Corps personnel. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi , laid the ship's keel on 13 August 1973; she was commissioned on 28 July 1979. [ 1 ]

The ship was damaged at the stern on 8 August 2009 when a fire broke out while it was moored at Frihamnen in Stockholm. On 26 June 2013 there was another fire, this time in the engine room and causing a loss of power. It had to anchor 17 miles off the coast of Venice, Italy, until four tugboats came to tow it to port.

Whilst in the Bering Sea, the ship and crew battled 90-foot (27 m) seas sailing through an area where two cyclones had merged. Belleau Wood received extensive damage from the storm which led to an extended stay in the naval shipyards at Subic Bay.
