The Rambler Six and the Rambler V8 are intermediate sized automobiles that were built and marketed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) for model years 1956 through 1960. Launched on 15 December 1955, the 1956 model year Rambler Six ushered a "new era in motoring has begun" according to George W. Romney , President of AMC. [ 1 ]
It is easy to confuse the 1957 Rambler V8 and the 1958-'60 Rebel line with the special 1957 Rambler Rebel, a limited edition muscle car (see 327 below). In 1961, The Rambler Six was renamed the "Rambler Classic" to avoid model confusion in the Rambler line-up. A V8 engine then became an option in the Classic instead of a separate model.
The Nash Ambassador Six retained the Nash 252.6 cu in (4.1 L) OHV six for 1955 and 1956, V8 only for 1957. The Nash OHV six, dating back to 1934, was a totally different design than the Rambler 195.6. Hudson six-cylinder cars retained the Hudson L-head six, 308 cu in (5.0 L) in the Hornet and 202 cu in (3.3 L) in the Wasp.
1961 Rambler Classic Cross Country. The new 1961 Classic 6 and V8 models went on display in Rambler showrooms on 12 October 1960. [1] They continued the body of the previous Rambler Six and V8, but featured a new front end with a one-piece, rectangular extruded aluminum grille, and new fenders, hood, sculptured door panels, and side trim, as well as redesigned one-piece bumpers.
It became the new American Motors Corporation's first straight-six engine. This engine was redesigned as an OHV for the 1956 model year.
