Cervicogenic headache is a type of headache characterized by chronic hemicranial pain referred to the head from either the cervical spine or soft tissues within the neck. Neck pain causes can be anything from sleeping in an uncomfortable position to serious neurological concerns. Experts explain causes, diagnosis, and treatments.
Neck pain may arise due to muscular tightness in both the neck and upper back, or pinching of the nerves emanating from the cervical vertebrae. The most common symptoms are fever, intense headache, vomiting and neck stiffness and occasionally photophobia. [1] Other symptoms include confusion or altered consciousness, nausea, and an inability to tolerate light or loud noises. [1] Young children often exhibit only nonspecific symptoms, such as irritability, drowsiness, or poor feeding. [1]
