The lake's name comes from the near-perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains and trees seen from a roadside overlook or from the shore. The shoreline is owned by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Mirror Lake includes the adjacent Mirror Lake Campground, with latrines, day-use areas and 94 campsites.
The highway begins at the intersection of Main Street and Center Street in Kamas and heads east on the latter as a two-lane undivided highway. Once exiting Kamas, the route dips southeast and continues as such until reaching Samak, where the road turns northeast briefly. Soon after, the highway turns south and southeast again.

The Mirror Lake Highway, a scenic byway that connects Kamas, Utah with Evanston, Wyoming, winds through the heart of Samak.Every summer in mid-June, the highway is used as a route for the mountain stage of the annual High Uintas Classic, a two-day bicycle race that takes participants from Kamas to Evanston.
Here, the route reaches its highest point at 10,626 feet (3,239 m) above sea level, the second-highest paved road in Utah behind the Mirror Lake Highway at 10,715 feet (3,266 m). [8] The route turns to the east here, while continuing south leads to the rest of Cedar Breaks National Monument and State Route 148 (the Cedar Breaks Scenic Byway). [1]
