Such use was common in Judaic worship [54] and remains in use for example in the Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican churches, Taoist and Buddhist Chinese jìngxiāng (敬香, 'offer incense [to ancestors/gods]'), etc. Different cultures have associated rising sweet-smelling smoke with prayer - communication directed towards a deity on high.
In traditional Chinese medicine, frankincense (Chinese: 乳香 rǔ xiāng) along with myrrh (沒藥 mò yào) are considered to have anti-bacterial properties and blood-moving uses. The wood has been used as incense in China from an early period, and it was said to be particularly favoured by the Taoists. [8] It is powdered and mixed with other substances to make incense, commonly in the form of joss sticks. It was first mentioned in 304 AD as a preservative in wine and an incense wood for the summoning of spirit. [6]

The incense-offering event took place in 1971, 1978, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016, almost solidifying the tradition of holding the event every four years. However, the 2020 Gengzi year incense-offering event was postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The next event is scheduled for 2024.
