Zortman is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Phillips County, Montana, United States. Its population was 69 as of the 2010 census. It was originally built as the Izaak Walton Hotel in 1939 by the Great Northern Railway as a soup kitchen and lodgings for railway workers. [2] The hotel was also originally envisioned as a potential official southern gateway to Glacier National Park , hence its size, but World War II intervened and that plan never materialized.
An addition was placed on the hotel in 1948 to accommodate new residents during a local oil boom. [3] The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 28, 1980. [1] On September 21, 2023, the historic and beloved hotel, and arguably the last piece of standing original history in Circle, Montana, burned down.
