The gold-bearing gravel deposit was about 8 feet (2.4 m) deep in most places, but thickened to 30 or 40 feet (9.1 or 12.2 m) against the mountain. [6] The few acres of the Montana Bar were freakishly rich in gold. It was claimed that the gravels of the Montana Bar were some of the richest ever washed, anywhere. [8]
It was originally built as the Izaak Walton Hotel in 1939 by the Great Northern Railway as a soup kitchen and lodgings for railway workers. [2] The hotel was also originally envisioned as a potential official southern gateway to Glacier National Park , hence its size, but World War II intervened and that plan never materialized.
Founded in 1862 and named after the local Bannock natives, Bannack was the site of a major gold discovery in 1862, and served as the capital of Montana Territory briefly in 1864, until the capital was moved to Virginia City. Bannack continued as a mining town, though with a dwindling population. The last residents left in the 1970s.
Montana has two consolidated city-counties—Anaconda with Deer Lodge County and Butte with Silver Bow County. The portion of Yellowstone National Park that lies within Montana was not part of any county until 1978, when part of it was nominally added to Gallatin County , and the rest of it to Park County .
