Underbone and miniature motorcycles often have a three to five-speed foot-shift lever, but the clutch is automatic (usually a centrifugal clutch). This type of clutchless (no manual clutch) transmission still must have the gears shifted manually by the rider, and the system is commonly known as a semi-automatic transmission.
The 400/450 Hondamatics, however, have no clutches at all. The foot-operated gear selector physically moves a gear with "dogs" to change gear engagement, the same as on a non-Hondamatic motorcycle transmission. Applications: CB750A (1976-1978) CB400A Hawk Hondamatic (1978) CM400A Hondamatic (1979-1981) CM450A Hondamatic (1982-1983)
Some (mostly smaller) motorcycles, and many scooters use either a continuously variable transmission, or a hydraulic automatic transmission. semi-automatic transmissions are also in use; where the driver's input is still required for shifting gears, but the clutch system is controlled and operated automatically.
A tube ensures flow of oil from the reservoir to the oil pump. This system is commonly used for motorcycles as it eliminates the need of pre-mixing fuel and two-stroke oil. Vespa is an example where pre-mixing of two-stroke oil is required. Automatic lubrication was introduced for motorcycles by Velocette in 1913. [1]
More recently, some have automatic or semi-automatic gearboxes, and some using CVT transmission. Outside the United States, engine capacities typically ranged from about 50 cc to 650 cc; but in Europe since 1968 motorcycles with larger capacities have become common, ranging as high as the Triumph Rocket 3 's 2,300 cubic centimetres (140 cu in ...
Automatic transmission fluids have many performance-enhancing chemicals added to the fluid to meet the demands of each transmission. [ citation needed ] Some ATF specifications are open to competing brands, such as the common DEXRON specification, where different manufacturers use different chemicals to meet the same performance specification.
The DN-01 is noted for its automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology, marketed by Honda as the "Human Friendly Transmission." [ 3 ] Reviewer complaints focused on ergonomics, especially potentially uncomfortable seating on long rides, and the lack of wind protection at high speed, meaning the rider is fatigued pulling on the ...
The CM400 series includes only a speedometer and three indicator lights (neutral, oil pressure, high beam) with a tachometer for the C and T models. The A (automatic) model has a gear indicator (N/1/2) in place of the tachometer and an additional indicator light for the parking brake, which is used since the A models have no manual clutch.
