Rollin Sprague was born in Ontario County, New York in 1806. He moved with his family to Oakland County by 1821, and by 1831 was a prominent local physician. in that year, he opened a drug store in Rochester in a partnership with his father-in-law, David Cooper.
Rochester was founded as a trading post in 1831 between the European settlers and local Native Americans, along the old Michigan Road where it intersected Mill Creek. Most of the contributing buildings lie along the old Michigan Road, now Main Street, in a right-of-way pattern (the newer, non-contributing buildings do not follow this pattern). [3]

Jones donated the farm to Michigan State University upon her death in 1972. The University donated the Van Hoosen Farmhouse and three acres to Avon Township, and in 1989, the City of Rochester Hills acquired the Van Hoosen Farm buildings and 13 surrounding acres.
