The Corning Museum of Glass is a museum in Corning, New York in the United States, dedicated to the art, history, and science of glass. It was founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works and currently has a collection of more than 50,000 glass objects, some over 3,500 years old.
Thomas Scharman Buechner (pronounced BEAK-ner; September 25, 1926 – June 13, 2010) was an artist who turned to working at museums. After working for New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, he became the founding director of the Corning Museum of Glass, and later director of the Brooklyn Museum, where he oversaw a major transformation in its operation and displays, before returning to Corning.
He is a Fellow at the Corning Museum of Glass where he was the curator of Modern Glass from 1978 to 1984 as well as the founding editor of the New Glass Review, and editor of Glass Quarterly magazine from 1986 to 1989. He is the author of several books about sculpture, primarily focusing on artists working in glass.
The Corning Museum of Glass was designed by Gunnar Birkerts & Associates. Corning's first new museum building since 1951, it opened in 1980 with the galleries well above the flood plain.
The Corning Ewer is an Islamic cameo ewer dating back to around AD 1000. [1] The ewer has been described as "the finest known example of Islamic cameo glass." [2] It is named after The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG), Corning, NY, it was purchased with funds from the Clara S. Peck Endowment. [1] The Corning Ewer is found in Tehran, Iran. [2]
