The LinnDrum, also referred to as the LM-2, [1] is a drum machine manufactured by Linn Electronics between 1982 and 1985. About 5,000 units were sold. About 5,000 units were sold. The drums in “Last Christmas” is typical LinnDrum sound.
The LM-1 was designed by the American engineer and guitarist Roger Linn in the late 1970s. [1] Linn was dissatisfied with drum machines available at the time, such as the Roland CR-78, and wanted a machine that did not simply play preset patterns and "sound like crickets".
The LinnDrum Midistudio (also known as the Midistudio) was going to be an electronic musical instrument produced by Linn Electronics as the successor to the ill-fated Linn 9000, which was an integrated digital sampling drum machine and MIDI sequencer. The Midistudio is essentially a rack-mount version of the Linn 9000 with some improvements. [1]
In 1979, Roger Linn and Alex Moffett [4] founded Linn Moffett Electronics (soon to be renamed Linn Electronics) to develop Linn's design for a drum machine that uses digital samples. The Linn 9000 was Roger Linn's first attempt to create an integrated sampling/sequencing/MIDI workstation, but it was plagued with problems from the beginning. [5] [6] On early models, the power supply over-heated the CPU and had to be replaced under warranty, but insurmountable issues with the Linn 9000's operating system forced its eventual demise.
In 2012, the drumline expanded into a drum and bugle corps using a stock of G major bugles. The corps partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus in 2014 to provide free music programs for club members in the Franklinton neighborhood. The "BOOM" performance ensemble resulted from this partnership. [4]
He is known for providing samples, service and upgrades for all Linn Electronics products after Linn went out of business in 1986.
