In women, the rectouterine pouch is the deepest point of the peritoneal cavity. It is posterior to the uterus, and anterior to the rectum. [2] Its anterior boundary is formed by the posterior fornix of the vagina. [1] The pouch on the other side of the uterus near to the anterior fornix is the vesicouterine pouch.
The medial umbilical ligament, cord of umbilical artery, or obliterated umbilical artery is a paired structure found in human anatomy. It is on the deep surface of the anterior abdominal wall , and is covered by the medial umbilical folds ( plicae umbilicales mediales ).
The vesicouterine pouch is a fold of peritoneum over the uterus and the bladder, forming a pelvic recess. [1] It is continued over the intestinal surface and body of the uterus onto its vesical surface, which it covers as far as the junction of the body and cervix uteri, and then to the bladder.
The mesometrium is the mesentery of the uterus. It constitutes the majority of the broad ligament of the uterus, [1] excluding only the portions adjacent to the uterine tube (the mesosalpinx) and ovary (the mesovarium). It is adjacent to the mesosalpinx. The ureter is among the structures found in the mesometrium.
The upper portion is the abdominal cavity, and it contains the stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, kidneys, small intestine, and most of the large intestine. The lower portion is the pelvic cavity, and it contains the urinary bladder, the rest of the large intestine (the lower portion), and the internal reproductive organs. [2] [3]
The peritoneum surrounds the uterus like a flat sheet that folds over its fundus, covering it anteriorly and posteriorly; on the sides of the uterus, this sheet of peritoneum comes in direct contact with itself, forming the double layer of peritoneum known as the broad ligament of the uterus.
The uterosacral ligaments pull the cervix posterior-ward, counteracting the anterior-ward pull exerted by the round ligament of uterus upon the fundus of the uterus, thus maintaining anteversion of the body of the uterus. [3]
