Dillwyn is located in east-central Buckingham County at (37.541658, −78.458869 U.S. Route 15 passes through the town, leading south 2 miles (3 km) to U.S. Route 60 and 23 miles (37 km) to Farmville, and north 37 miles (60 km) to Interstate 64 east of Charlottesville.

Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is a public community college in Lynchburg, Virginia. It is part of the Virginia Community College System . Established in 1966, CVCC serves students at the main campus in Lynchburg or at one of its off-site centers in Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell counties.

The former middle school and Dillwyn Elementary were expanded and renovated to become Buckingham County Primary (K-2nd Grade) and Buckingham County Elementary (3rd Grade to 5th Grade). In addition due to the expansion and budget cuts, Gold Hill Elementary in Arvonia/New Canton and Dillwyn Primary Schools were closed.
