Barrington Court is a Tudor manor house begun around 1538 and completed in the late 1550s, with a vernacular 17th century stable court. After repair by Alfred Hoare Powell , it was the first house acquired by the National Trust, in 1907, on the recommendation of the antiquarian Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley . [ 8 ]
King's Castle is an Iron Age enclosed hilltop settlement at the south-western edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells in Somerset, England.Though there are many prehistoric sites in the surrounding area, it remains one of the earliest known settlements in the immediate vicinity of Wells, and may have been a precursor to the present day city. Boundary Wall. Construction began around 1210 by Bishop Jocelin of Wells but principally dates from 1230. [1] Bishop Jocelin continued the cathedral building campaign begun by Bishop Reginald Fitz Jocelin, and was responsible for building the Bishop's Palace, as well as the choristers' school, a grammar school, a hospital for travellers and a chapel within the liberty of the cathedral.
There are two heaps of unused mortar on the fort. There are two large wells on the fort, one near the Khed entrance and the other near Pareshwar temple. The water from these wells is used for drinking by the trekkers. The best time to visit the fort is from December to january.
Croscombe is a village and civil parish 2 miles (3 km) west of Shepton Mallet and 4 miles (6 km) from Wells, in the Mendip district of Somerset, England.It is situated on the A371 road in the valley of the River Sheppey.
The village lies in a small hollow near the summit of the Mendip range of hills, at an elevation of 260 metres (850 ft) above sea-level, and has evidence of occupation since neolithic times. [2] There are remains of lead mining activities [3] and caves in the limestone beneath the village. It is the venue for the annual Priddy Folk Festival. [4]
