In the case of settlements that have had their official names changed the traditional name is listed first followed by the new name.
The Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa, which has seats in Pretoria and Johannesburg, has jurisdiction over all cases arising in the province. However, most cases are first heard in one of the over 25 district magistrates' courts or in the regional magistrate's court for the province.

The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality was established on 5 December 2000, [4] comprising 13 former city and town councils and managed under an executive mayoral system. The Metsweding District Municipality was incorporated into the municipality [5] with effect from 18 May 2011 (the date of the 2011 municipal elections).

The municipal council consists of seventy-seven members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.Thirty-nine councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in thirty-nine wards, while the remaining thirty-eight are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
