The Crystal Lake Recreation Area is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, administered by the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument (formally the San Gabriel River Ranger District) of the United States Forest Service.
Together, they became National Forests on March 4, 1907, and they were combined on July 1, 1908, with all of the San Bernardino forest and portions of San Gabriel forest and Santa Barbara forest composing the new Angeles National Forest. In 1916, there was a movement to create the Sierra Madre National Park, but that never occurred.
The flat itself houses a large public picnic area, and is the starting point for several historic trails of the San Gabriel Mountains, including the 28.5-mile (45.9 km) Gabrielino Trail. The US Forest Service estimates the road to Chantry as the third busiest entry into the Angeles, next to CA State Highways 2 and 39. [1]

The San Gabriel Forest Reserve was established on December 20, 1892. [1] The Old Short Cut Cabin was constructed where Shortcut Canyon joins the West Fork of the San Gabriel River Canyon. The Cabin was restored and move to the United States Forest Service's Chilao Visitor Center in the 1980s just off Angeles Crest Highway. [2] [3]
