Okahandja is a city [3] of 45,159 inhabitants in Otjozondjupa Region, central Namibia, and the district capital of the Okahandja electoral constituency. It is known as the Garden Town of Namibia. It is located 70 km north of Windhoek on the B1 road. It was founded around 1800, by two local groups, the Herero and the Nama. [4]
Otjozondjupa is one of a few Namibian regions where there is considerable opposition support. In the 2004 regional election for the National Assembly of Namibia, the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) won in six of the seven constituencies, Okakarara was won by National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO). [9]
At that time the road network in South West Africa was being developed under the supervision, and at the initiative, of Jonker Afrikaner. Hahn and Kleinschmidt initiated the creation of a path from Windhoek to Barmen via Okahandja, and in 1850 this road, later known as Alter Baiweg (Old Bay Path), was extended via Otjimbingwe to Walvis Bay. Okahandja Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia. It had 18,155 inhabitants in 2004 [ 1 ] and 18,109 registered voters in 2020 [update] . [ 2 ] The constituency consists of the town of Okahandja and the surrounding rural area.
It connects Noordoewer in the south on the South African border with Oshikango in the north on the Angolan border via Namibia's capital city Windhoek. The route exists in two discontinuous sections: a southern 802-kilometre (498 mi) section from Noordoewer to Windhoek, and a northern 665-kilometre (413 mi) section from Okahandja to Oshikango.
Before independence in 1990, when the country was under South African administration, it formed part of that country's post code system, but following independence, use of post codes was discontinued. The C31 is a secondary route in Namibia that runs 196 kilometres (122 mi) from Okahandja via Hochfeld to Otjinene. It branches off the B1 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) north of Okahandja and terminates at the junction with the C29 at Summerdown. [1] The B2 road can be accessed from the B1, a few miles from the C31 junction. [2]
