The Intouchables (French: Intouchables, pronounced [ɛ̃tuʃablə]), also known as Untouchable in the UK, Ireland, and Scandinavia, [2] is a 2011 French buddy comedy-drama film written and directed by Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache. It stars François Cluzet and Omar Sy.
The story of Philippe and his Algerian attendant, Abdel Sellou, was told in a 2003 documentary, A la vie, à la mort. [7] Their story was also adapted in the biographical movies The Intouchables (2011), [8] and the Indian, Argentine, and American re-makes, respectively, Oopiri (2016), (Spanish article) Inseparables (2016), [9] and The Upside (2017). Toledano and Nakache collaborated several times before directing The Intouchables (2011), which became one of the greatest box office successes in French film history [4] and for which they were nominated for several awards, including three Cesar Awards. They have collaborated several times with actor Omar Sy, most recently in the 2014 film Samba.
The screenplay is loosely based on Ness and Oscar Fraley's 1957 book The Untouchables and the real-life events it was based on, though most of its plot is fictionalized. [4] [5] The Grammy Award–winning score was composed by Ennio Morricone and features period music by Duke Ellington. [6]
