Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester (24 June 1532 [note 1] – 4 September 1588) was an English statesman and the favourite of Elizabeth I from her accession until his death. He was a suitor for the queen's hand for many years.

He joined the household of Thomas Wharton, 1st Baron Wharton, who secured his return as Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Carlisle in March 1553. [2] By 1559 he had joined the household of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester. [3] He was granted special admittance to the Inner Temple in 1561 at the same time as Leicester. [4]
Henry Dudley (c. 1531 – 10 August 1557) was an English soldier and an elder brother of Queen Elizabeth I's favourite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.Their father was John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, who led the English government from 1550 to 1553 under Edward VI and unsuccessfully tried to establish Lady Jane Grey on the English throne after the King's death in July 1553.
