Matara Fort: Clocktower, merlons and bartizan. Matara (Sinhala: මාතර, romanized: Māthara; Tamil: மாத்தறை) is a major city in Sri Lanka, on the southern coast of Southern Province. It is the second largest city in Southern Province. It is 160 km (99 mi) from Colombo.
The main road system from Matara to inner parts of the city is spreading across this division. Today, this division as a migratory zone has become a very crowded area. At present, there are 36,742 people living in the division and most of them are well educated and actively engaging in the development of the country.
Matara District is located in the south west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 1,282.5 square kilometres (495.2 sq mi). [2]It is represented in the Sri Lankan Parliament following the 2010 Sri Lankan parliamentary election by former Sri Lankan national cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya who stood for the United People's Freedom Alliance.
Matara electoral district is one of the 22 multi-member electoral districts of Sri Lanka created by the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka. The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Matara in the Southern province .
