A uniflow engine is a piston engine where gas flow through the cylinder proceeds in a single unidirectional flow, without reversals between strokes. This gives thermodynamic advantages as each group of ports can stabilise at an equilibrium temperature , rather than being alternately heated and cooled.
The engine is the largest reciprocating engine in the world. The 14-cylinder version first entered commercial service in September 2006 aboard the Emma Mærsk . The design is similar to the older RTA96C engine, but with common rail technology (in place of traditional camshaft , chain gear , fuel pump and hydraulic actuator systems).
In small sizes (less than about 1,000 hp (750 kW)), reciprocating steam engines are much more efficient than steam turbines. White Cliffs Solar Power Station used a three-cylinder uniflow engine with " Bash "-type admission valves to generate about 25 kW electrical output.
Ray-traced image of a piston engine. There may be one or more pistons. Each piston is inside a cylinder, into which a gas is introduced, either already under pressure (e.g. steam engine), or heated inside the cylinder either by ignition of a fuel air mixture (internal combustion engine) or by contact with a hot heat exchanger in the cylinder (Stirling engine).
Animation of a two-stroke engine. A two-stroke (or two-stroke cycle) engine is a type of internal combustion engine that completes a power cycle with two strokes of the piston (one up and one down movement) in one revolution of the crankshaft in contrast to a four-stroke engine which requires four strokes of the piston in two crankshaft revolutions to complete a power cycle.

The most efficient reciprocating steam engine design (per stage) was the uniflow engine, but by the time it appeared steam was being displaced by diesel engines, which were even more efficient and had the advantages of requiring less labor (for coal handling and oiling), being a more dense fuel, and displaced less cargo.
Due to their higher compression ratios, diesel engines have a much smaller final combustion chamber volume, requiring much less liquid to hydrolock. Diesel engines also tend to have higher torque, rotating inertia, and stronger starter motors than gasoline engines. The result is that a diesel engine is more likely to suffer catastrophic damage.
