He attended Croftfoot Primary School in Glasgow, followed by Broomhill Primary and went on to study at Hyndland Secondary School in the west end of Glasgow. He graduated in Drawing & Painting from Glasgow School of Art in 1971, before going on to Postgraduate Studies in printmaking at Brighton Polytechnic, now known as University of Brighton.

She was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, Scotland. [1] After her studies of Fine Art and Printed Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art, she won the Newbury Medal of Distinction, the Frank Warner Memorial Medal, the Leverhulme Scholarship and the Royal Society of Arts Bursary, she subsequently went on to further study at the Royal College of Art in London, where she gained her Master of Arts degree.
