Newberry County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina.As of the 2020 census, its population was 37,719. [4] Its county seat is Newberry. [5] The name is of unknown origin, although one theory suggests that it was named by Quaker settlers in honor of their home of Newberry, a suburb of London in the United Kingdom.

The mountain was referred to as Ruff's Mountain until sometime in the 1800s. It was part of Lexington County until 1917 when the current border was established. Property in this area was not recorded in the Newberry County tax records until some time in the 1920s. The Eastern side of the mountain was once owned by Sam Birge, and later Arthur Kohn.

The population was 10,277 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Newberry County; [4] at one time it was called Newberry Courthouse.
